Please use the Soil Profile Descriptions problem supplement for this problem.

During the class field trip you will have the opportunity to view a micro catena of soil pedons representing the range of drainage morphological characteristics across a typical broad upland landscape in the Piedmont region.  Gray colors for this exercise will be defined as having a matrix or mottles that have chromas of 2 or less and values of 4 or more based upon the Munsell Color Charts.  Based upon your observations and using the soil profile descriptions prepared for the soil pedons, answer the following questions:

  1. Are there any gray colors present in soil pedon #1?
    1. A-horizon  __________
    2. B-horizon  __________
    3. C-horizon  __________

  1. What drainage class best describes soil pedon #1?
    1. Excessively Drained  __________
    2. Well Drained  __________
    3. Moderately Well Drained  __________
    4. Somewhat Poorly Drained  __________
    5. Poorly Drained  __________
    6. Very Poorly Drained  __________

  1. The seasonally high water table for soil pedon #1 occurs at what depth?  __________ inches below the surface

  1. Are there any gray colors present in soil pedon #2?
    1. A-horizon  __________
    2. B-horizon  __________
    3. C-horizon  __________

  1. What drainage class best describes soil pedon #2?
    1. Excessively Drained  __________
    2. Well Drained  __________
    3. Moderately Well Drained  __________
    4. Somewhat Poorly Drained  __________
    5. Poorly Drained  __________
    6. Very Poorly Drained  __________

  1. The seasonally high water table for soil pedon #2 occurs at what depth?  __________ inches below the surface

  2. Are there any gray colors present in soil pedon #3?
    1. A-horizon  __________
